Subject: Excellent UJB of an A+ show
Subject: Excellent UJB of an A+ show
So many great musical moments by everyone in this show and the day before. But the 7/19/90 UJB was/is especially sweet and the boys had the luv-jam machine cranking & blending very nicely on that one. A definitive late era heady version IMHO. A lot of wonderful & exquisitely emotive counterpoint. Jerry is the one that leads with the extra long sweet inspirational solo. He was so in the moment & the pocket. And the rest of the band followed and complement Jerry's lead within each of their respective counter solos/jams. Everyone drives the rhyme & rhythmic feel of the song in support of liberty and friendship. Everyone is a standout on their parts [not a weak or bum note in the bunch] especially coming out of the 4 prior wonderfully performed songs & their respective jams. I don't think anyone was NOT on their A+ game in this show. Especially cool, long, and cinematic spacey drums AND chimey & funkadelic space sequence. Jerry repeatedly nails all of his vocals [leads and harmonies] & guitar solos with sweetness and a variety of other emotions that suite each song's theme. Everyone is simply perfect. Comments based on the Dave's picks #40 recording.

… record streams. I use WireTap it's so simple you can capture anything that is on streaming audio, these matrix tapes sound very good recorded, one long file then you edit it into tracks and you have a show.

I'm so glad I stumbled upon this show. Great versions of some of my favorite Dead tunes. A high energy Jack Straw. A FLAWLESS and beautiful They Love Eachother. And one of the best Foolish Hearts I have heard (Alpine '89 still blows this one away in my view). Oh! and Phil's bass! So LOOOUUDD! Got to love it!

So glad that this site exists! Listening to these shows brings back great memories of old friends. I think this was the best show of the three! Desolation Row was superb. NFA was incredible! the crowd went on with the chorus forever until the boys came back with US Blues.

After utilizing this incredible site for the past few years, I've come to the realization that everytime I think I've blown my mind, I listen to a show like this and have to reconsider what's mindblowning!!! The Jack Straw is upbeat and solidly played...umm Jerry??? I've never quite heard a guitarist who could keep rhythm and lead like he could, what a rare talent. Victim -> Foolish is truley rewarding. As previously posted, I would most definetley appreciate a copy of this show so I can enjoy and share alike!!

Never made it out to Deer Creek but always seemed that they played the venue perfectly. the sound quality on this is tremendous and is a keeper. I have to agree on the Victim/Foolish. it seemed that Jerry and Brent loved playing that together.

I have had the DSBD copy on Maxell for 16 years---I only play it a few times a year so I do not lose the early generation SBD copy I have so treasured. If anyone out there has this downloaded and could burn a copy--I will more than cover an necessary fees-efforts to get this gem on CD. Please contact me @ richmccalmon@gmail.com if you can help me out.
Mucho gracias. It would mean the world.....

This is just great. My run was '82 until the end. So like many I am partial to the Brent years. As others have said the Desolation is well worth repeated listens to this show.

The weather was perfect. The humidity was low. The shows were sold-out bigtime. The Grateful Dead stepped up to the plate and delivered solid performances. The audience was tickled-pink to be there. Expectations were high, and the Boyz didn't let anyone down.
The Audience recordings of this run capture the crowd's energy level; seek them out if possible. The 7.19.1990 'Black Peter > NFA' will get you pumped-up via the audience recordings out there versus the bored recordings -but either will make a fan proud!
These were all hot shows~ :)

Great Quality - I truly believe that the brent years produced some of the tightest playing shows ever. Has anyone herd of Jeff Matheson-he plays with the zen tricksters-he plays and sounds just like jerry. He played with phil once and phil got scared so he wont play with him anymore.

This one is good, but I find the version of desolation from alpine valley 89 to be the definitive hair raising goose bumper. Jerry's trickles, solo's and colorings of Bobby's lyrical work are just outstanding, and lead the listener by the hand and heart, into that realm of emotion within his playing that is so pure, exposed, and beautiful. My top desolation, hands down.

I attended these two deer creek shows -- my first venture out west -- and loved every minute of it. everything fell into place: the weather, the awesome parking lot scene, the lax security, the band playing "ON". The previous night's first set was the best of the run, but the first set on the 19th was awesome, too. I have always looked for a clean copy of this one. This is it.

The sound is crystal clear (even the mp3 files), and the Boys simply smoke. Sure, there are a few flubs here and there, but no show was ever completely flawless. Picasso Moon and Althea are excellent, as is the first half of the second set. A very, very solid late Brent-era show. Get it.

The quality is outstanding, and the first set is magnificent. One of the best Jack Straws ever, and the Row Jimmy has an excellent Brent solo. Jerry lets him go on, and then comes in with this line that just gives me the shivers.... Excellent show from the 90's with Brent at top form.

Well, I actually got to listen to this show after being in a time-scrambled haze the first evening. I much prefer this show to the first night. The Althea is really intense and i think the Row Jimmy is really the quintessential version for me- the solo after the first verse is absolutely beatiful and strange and the singing is very deeply felt. The second set is fantastic. Playin jam is other-worldly, beautiful china doll, (I could skip on the Watchtower to be honest, but I've never liked the Dead's take on it all that much), strong Black Peter, and a really exciting, unique, and well played NotFade Away- really great jam.

After night one I found myself at Phil's feet for night two--5 stars for completely selfish reasons--It's hard to say which night was better. That Victim craziness going into Foolish Heart knocked my shoes off I loved the China Doll between the Playin' and UJB--NFA w/o a Throwin' is always a nice surprise
And Mr Milks yoyo on the Althea--always loved this song Peace

gans played a ton of this on Dead head hour in the early 90's. I then upgraded to the whole show from a local LA radio program. Went back and listened again and this show still holds up. Solid overall. Big smiles remembering the great 89/90 run this band put together

This show was played on the GDH a long time ago and is one of my favorites. Every song in the first set is beautifully done. Great Garcia solos on TLEO and Row Jimmy, Brent is on throughout, and the Desolation Row has a unique bounciness to it. Great sound quality, too.
